Situation Overview

Madagascar’s Mpox outbreak was officially declared by the Ministry of Public Health on 30 December 2025, following laboratory confirmation. The Ministry has since confirmed the outbreak involves Mpox Clade 1b. As of 16 January 2026, 78 confirmed cases have been reported nationally, with the first confirmed cases identified in Mahajanga I District, Boeny Region. Since detection, surveillance and notification have expanded, with 290 cumulative notified cases recorded nationwide, including 212 suspected cases, 10 recovered cases, and no deaths reported to date. The outbreak remains predominantly concentrated in Boeny region (North-West), accounting for 86 confirmed cases and 119 suspected cases, while 28 confirmed cases were reported in Vakinankaratra region and 2 in Betsiboka region. Additional suspected cases have been notified in seventeen other regions (out of 23, representing two third of the country): Diana (7), Atsimo Andrefana (4), Alaotra Mangoro (1), Analamanga (12), Anosy (1), Atsimo Andrefana( 4), Betsiboka ( 7) Bongolava ( 1), Fitovinany ( 1), Haute Matsiatra (12),Itasy ( 1), Menabe ( 3), Sava ( 1), Sofia (6), Vakinankaratra (23), Vatovavy (8), Melaky (4) . At this stage, 8 confirmed cases are involving children, and 84 suspected children’s cases have been reported.
