Relief efforts continue following the four
cyclones, heavy rains, and floods that struck several Southern African
countries since February, causing hundreds of thousands of people to lose
their homes, belongings and crops. The devastating weather has already
washed away one harvest and left the ground too soggy for the March-April
planting, leaving people in need of basic food support until the next planting
scheduled for September.
In Mozambique, CWS is providing locally
purchased Rural Resettlement Kits (valued at $180 each), which are being
distributed to some 6,000 families as they return home. In Madagascar,
CWS is providing 3,000 families with Housing Rehabilitation Kits and Rural
Resettlement Kits, which are designed specifically for needs in that country.
Thus far, CWS has provided $793,000 for relief efforts including blankets,
rebuilding and resettlement kits, and technical volunteers in Mozambique,
Madagascar, and Zimbabwe.
