Madagascar

Madagascar – TC FYTIA and GEZANI – Emergency Response (DG ECHO, Reliefweb, BNGRC) (ECHO Daily Flash of 26 February 2026)

  • Following Tropical Cyclones Fytia and Gezani, UN OCHA launched a flash appeal with a budget of USD 67.8 million, to cover the humanitarian needs of 486 000 targeted beneficiaries out of 581 000 people in need, for a period of three months (March to May). Identified humanitarian needs include food, nutrition, health, WASH, emergency shelter, protection, agricultural support, logistics, communication, coordination and other common services.
  • The national authorities (Bureau National de Gestion des Risques de Catastrophes) report shortfalls needing immediate attention, including a lack of clean water and medical inputs and poor hygiene conditions, a prolonged occupation of common infrastructures such as schools, and disruptions in the delivery of food assistance and multi-purpose cash transfers.
  • Team Europe has been providing emergency assistance with additional humanitarian funding, the mobilisation of ongoing EU-funded programmes to provide immediate relief to affected population, the deployment of experts and the activation of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism and satellite mapping through the Copernicus Rapid Mapping service.
