Madagascar, Mozambique - Tropical Storm ANA (DG ECHO, GDAC, JTWC, INAM, BNGRC, Meteo Madagascar, media) (ECHO Daily Flash of 24 January 2022)

  • A new Tropical Storm named ANA formed over the Indian Ocean on 22 January and started moving westward, passing over northern Madagascar.

  • In Madagascar, several heavy rain alerts are in progress after the passage of Tropical Depression N°01 in Northern Madagascar. Provisional assessment of the national disaster management authorities (BNGRC) on 23 January for Grand Tana (the epicenter of the damages) reports 26 people dead; 47,261 victims spread over 20 districts and about 26,730 displaced people have been displaced in Antananarivo Capital City.

  • Under UN OCHA coordination lead, international actors have been mobilised to support the national response across key sectors (shelter, WASH, Health, food security and protection).

  • Over the next 24 hours, heavy rainfall and strong winds are forecasted over central-northern Madagascar and over coastal Provinces of Mozambique. Red alerts for tropical depression are in force over coastal Provinces of Mozambique.
