- The lingering effects of ongoing drought and cyclones, including Tropical Cyclone Gamane, continued to threaten access to food, livelihoods, protection, and WASH services across Madagascar as of late September.
- More than 1.2 million people across Madagascar likely experienced Crisis—IPC 3—levels of acute food insecurity between May and September, according to an IPC analysis. The scale of acute food insecurity is expected to increase as harvests conclude in October and food stocks deplete, FEWS NET reports.
- Widespread locust infestations had affected more than 667,000 acres of farmland in central and southwestern regions of Madagascar as of August, according to FEWS NET. A projected increase in locust infestations during the November-to-April rainy season is expected to further threaten crop production across Madagascar, exacerbating food insecurity.
