REGIONAL SUMMARY

  • Many countries across Southern Africa face food insecurity, recurrent drought, and frequent suddenonset disasters, such as cyclones and floods.

  • In FY 2022, USAID’s Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance (USAID/BHA) provided approximately $105.5 million to 11 partner organizations to conduct early recovery, risk reduction, and resilience (ER4) activities in four countries across the region.

  • ER4 programs in Southern Africa address the underlying drivers of chronic food insecurity; empower communities to build assets and livelihoods; and improve emergency preparedness and response capacity at local, national, and regional levels.

  • During the fiscal year, USAID/BHA continued to support multi-year Resilience Food Security Activities (RFSAs) in Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe to bolster local resilience to drought and sudden-onset shocks.

  • USAID/BHA also built on the expertise and capacities of local partners to conduct ER4 activities. In Zimbabwe, local organizations—such as Dabane Water Workshops, Environment Africa, Nutrition Action Zimbabwe, and the Organization of Rural Associations for Progress—are making important contributions to ER4 programming. During the fiscal year, USAID/BHA began directly supporting local partner Mwenezi Development Training Center to diversify livelihoods among at-risk households in Masvingo Province while strengthening local capacity to withstand future shocks through agricultural and water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) programming.
