ACT Alert: Madagascar - Tropical Cyclone "Haruna"

1. Brief description of the emergency and impact

Tropical cyclone “Haruna” has hit Madagascar bringing heavy rains accompanied by gusty winds causing flooding in most parts of the south west of Madagascar. The most affected areas in the western part of Boeny, Melaky, Betsiboka Bongolava Menabe Atsimo-Andrefana Vatovavy-Fitovinany Atsimo-Atsinanana, Androy and Anosy. Most of these areas have already been classified as being in the red and orange alert categories.

People in the eastern part of Madagascar are also affected as a result of “Cyclone Felleng” that hit the eastern coast of Madagascar on 30 January to 03 February, 2013.

Preliminary information collected to date is as follows: Four people are reported to have died, two missing, 3,806 victims, 615 homeless, 1,440 houses flooded, 13 houses totally destroyed and 13 roads cut off.

The cyclone is projected to make a landfall on 22 February, 2013 at Toliary, South West and traverse through the southern part of Madagascar exiting on 23 February, 2013 at Tsihombe, South East. The real extent of the impact will only be known afterwards.
