Asylum-seekers: Between Jan-June 2023, 1,067 persons applied for asylum, a 14 % increase compared to the same period in 2022. Top countries of origin were Syria, Eritrea and Afghanistan.

Legislative elections: Ahead of the legislative elections on 8 October, UNHCR has been meeting political parties to present and exchange on its key recommendations.

UNHCR recommendations: UNHCR calls on the next government to, inter alia, preserve international and intraEU solidarity, maintain a protective and effective asylum system and facilitate family reunification.

HIGHLIGHTS

Support for Integration UNHCR has made a study on refugees’ integration in Luxembourg, focusing on language learning, access to housing, and employment. In July, UNHCR discussed the study’s outcomes with the Ministry of Family and Integration.

Reception conditions for Unaccompanied and separated children (UACs) In June-July, UNHCR conducted a follow-up study to its 2019 report on reception conditions for UASCs in Luxembourg, which included visits to reception centres and participatory assessments with UASCs.

Know Your Rights campaign Between May-July, UNHCR and law firm DLA Piper Luxembourg organized the 4th edition of the “Know Your Rights” campaign composed of nine information sessions aimed at the legal empowerment of refugees and asylum seekers.
