Lithuania maintains a favourable protection environment for forcibly displaced and stateless people, and successfully leads in Europe on labour market inclusion of refugees from Ukraine, as part of the largest refugee response in its history.

Lithuania is included in the Ukraine Regional Refugee Response Plan (RRP). So far in 2024, RRP partners have reached 14,300 refugees with assistance and support in Lithuania.

UNHCR undertakes protection monitoring visits at border crossing points, frontier stations and foreigners/refugee registration centres to monitor the situation of people seeking international protection.

Protection assistance

UNHCR provides support to refugees through projects implemented by partner organizations Lithuanian Red Cross and Artscape, which mainly focus on counselling, integration and psycho-social support.

Community empowerment and self-reliance

June 2024 saw a week of events dedicated to World Refugee Day supported by UNHCR, where refugees played a central role including during the opening of the Refugee Week. Events included several public discussions, as well as a music festival titled “Cultural Rhythms” in downtown Vilnius.

Education

Data from UNHCR Protection Monitoring Survey show that 85 per cent of children who arrived in Lithuania more than six months ago are enrolled in schools.
