Operational Updates

• In July, WFP provided cash-based transfers (CBTs) totalling USD 119,043 to 10,023 food-insecure Libyans in Tripoli, Azzawya, Tawergha and Sebha.

• In response to an urgent request from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and part of WFP’s bimonthly assistance, WFP, distributed 50 food parcels (1.2 mt) and 25 boxes of date bars (0.32 mt) to 450 vulnerable migrants stranded at the Libyan-Tunisian border in Alassa, to cover their food needs for at least 21 days.

Emergency Sudanese Refugee Response

• As of July, UNHCR estimates that 96,000 Sudanese refugees have arrived in Libya since the conflict started in April 2023.

• An estimated 21,000 refugees moved from Al Kufra to Ajdabiya, Benghazi and Tripoli in the past 2.5 months.

• From 8 to 15 July, WFP participated in an inter-agency mission conducted to Al Kufra, the main entry point for Sudanese refugees into Libya, to assess urgent needs through interviews and focus group discussions. Food was highlighted as a priority, alongside health. Further, over 50 percent of Sudanese refugees use negative coping mechanisms, and children show signs of malnutrition.

• On 18 July, WFP participated in a senior inter-agency mission to Al Kufra, led by the UN Resident Coordinator, to guide the UN’s scaled up humanitarian response and action with authorities and partners. The local authorities reported that they had been providing food assistance in coordination with local partners over the past few months.

• Food dispatches started at the end of July targeting Tripoli, Ajdabiyah, Jalu, Awjlah and Ejkhra, with the plan to reach roughly 35,000 vulnerable Sudanese across Libya in August.

• During the reporting period, WFP is awaiting the arrival of food commodities to expand coverage to the coastal and southern areas with a high concentration of newly arrived refugees.
