Catherine Ashton, EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Commission Vice-President, today made the following statement

"The meeting of the Contact Group on Libya in Istanbul today has reaffirmed the commitment of the international community to bring the Libyan crisis to a quick and satisfactory conclusion.

Under the leadership of the United Nations, the international community will continue to implement UNSC Resolutions 1970 and 1973 and will intensify the pressure towards the immediate end of the Kadhafi regime. The suffering of the Libyan people must end now.

The European Union will work closely with its international partners and with the Libyan Transitional National Council to support the Libyan people from Day One after the departure of Kadhafi, including in the areas of stabilisation, political transition and in the revival of economy."
