Statement by Michel Gabaudan, President of Refugees International

Washington, D.C. – “As Libyan rebels make significant advances in their campaign to overthrow Moammar Gaddafi, Refugees International calls on the leadership of the Transitional National Council to ensure the immediate protection of those displaced by this conflict, irrespective of their political allegiances. We are particularly concerned that the Council ensures the safety of those third-country nationals who have been targeted for their perceived alliances to Col. Gaddafi. It is essential that the Council leadership and commanders on the ground do all they can to prevent reprisal attacks against these individuals. This is an historic moment for the Libyan people – one that should not be tainted by acts of revenge, but rather celebrated through reconciliation and a demonstrated commitment to human rights and democracy. With the country poised to enter this critical period of political transition, the TNC’s ability to protect the most vulnerable in Libyan society will be a key indicator of its readiness to govern.”
