Tripoli, 15 January 2025 - In response to the escalating humanitarian crisis in Sudan, UNICEF Libya has received $1,500,000 in funding from the Education Cannot Wait (ECW), the United Nations global fund for education in emergencies. UNICEF in collaboration with local and international partners, aims to address the urgent educational and psychosocial needs of vulnerable children displaced by the ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The programme, set to reach 19,000 girls and boys across Kufra, Tripoli, Misrata, Sebha, and Ajdabiya, provides both formal and non-formal educational opportunities, ensuring children facing barriers, such as lack of documentation can still access learning.
The initiative will also support children with disabilities through targeted initiatives, including Montessori-based learning tools and resource rooms, fostering an inclusive learning environment for all. Additionally, the programme integrates mental health and psychosocial support to address the trauma and challenges faced by children affected by displacement and violence.
This programme will also strengthen the capacity of educators. Teachers will be trained in inclusive, child-centred pedagogies and gender-sensitive approaches to enhance the quality of education provided.
“Education is a lifeline for children caught in crises, offering them stability, hope, and the skills they need to rebuild their futures. This contribution from ECW allows us to tackle the critical education gaps for Sudanese refugee children in Libya, ensuring that no child is left behind” said Mohammad Fayyazi, the UNICEF Representative.
The programme will run from December 2024 to December 2025, highlighting the steadfast commitment to supporting education in emergencies while fostering safe and equitable opportunities for all children.
