Key Observations:

Increases in Population Densities

  • On the 17th of September, the Darnah district recorded a +22% rise in population density compared to its pre-crisis baseline.

Decreases in Population Densities

  • Between the 18th and 19th of September, a sharp decrease in Facebook users was observed in Barnah province, especially in the city of Derna.
  • During the night of the 18th, Darnah’s population density rate dropped to -48%, then slightly rose to -42% on the 19th.
  • The overall population in Darnah went down from over 17,000 users on the 17th of September to just above 4,600 by the 19th.
  • The city of Derna appears to be the hardest hit, with only a few current Facebook users detectable.

Network Status and Outages

  • The primary reason for the significant decline in users in Darnah seems to be a massive network outage, affecting user count in mobility datasets.
  • Reports suggest that network services to the area, particularly Derna, have been disrupted.
  • Other regions in eastern Libya remain unaffected by these outages.
