Tripoli, 18 January 2012: The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Dr. Jean Ping, on 16 January 2012, during his visit to Libya, met with the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary‐General (SRSG) and Head of the United Nations Support Mission to Libya (UNSMIL), Mr. Ian Martin, to discuss the ongoing transition in the country.
Chairperson Ping stressed the importance for the African Union to establish a presence in Libya in the near future, in order to contribute to the overall stabilization efforts in the country.
On his part, SRSG Martin briefed the Chairperson on the United Nations’ efforts to assist the Libyan authorities in several areas, including: elections, transitional justice, public security and arms proliferation, in accordance with UNSMIL’s mandate.
Both personalities agreed on the need for the African Union and the United Nations to coordinate their efforts in support of the Libyan authorities’ endeavors to meet the legitimate aspirations of the Libyan people.
