Highlights

  • WFP provided emergency food assistance to over 40 contacts and their households related to the Ebola Virus infection cases reported on 30 March and in early April.

  • WFP and the Ministries of Health, Agriculture and Education started an assessment to pilot Home-Grown School Feeding in ten schools in Nimba County.

  • Due to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR’s) repatriation exercise, the number of refugees from Cote d’Ivoire in 2016 reduced from 30,000 in January to about 16,000 in April. WFP has continued to provide General Food Distributions (GFD) albeit at reduces rations to all refugees residing in the three camps.

Operational Updates

  • Emergency Food Assistance: Aiming to assist in containing the virus, WFP provided food assistance to over 40 contacts and their households (240 people) in relation to the EVD cases reported on 30 March and early April.

  • School Feeding Expansion: The Ministry of Education in conjunction with WFP expanded the number of students benefiting from the school feeding programme from 127,000 to 300,000 in nine counties. This more than doubled the number of students receiving protein rich daily school meals to encourage enrolment, retention and academic progress. Refugee Operation Evaluation: An independent evaluation of the PRRO 200550 Refugee Operation to support Cote d’Ivoire refugees, was conducted in March, since the project ends in April. The evaluation, findings delineate the design of the next phase of the operations which are expected to start after July 2016. Assessments are ongoing that will determine the focus of WFP’s assistance (e.g Food for Assets, General Food Distributions, Cash transfers etc.)

  • Refugee Repatriation: WFP Liberia has initiated a Budget Revision to extend the project until July 2016. Monthly food distributions continue to be ongoing in the camps based on real-time refugee statistics.
