UNMIL SRSG statement on the lifting of the Liberia diamond sanctions

The Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Liberia, (SRSG) Mr. Alan Doss, welcomes the decision of the Security Council to lift the sanctions on the export of rough diamonds from Liberia.

The SRSG - who serves as Vice-Chair on the Presidential Task Force on Sanctions on Diamonds -congratulates President Johnson Sirleaf and her government for working hard to meet the conditions required for the termination of the diamond sanctions and for compliance with the Kimberley Process.

SRSG Doss encourages the Government to further intensify its collaborative work with international partners and national stakeholders to ensure that the diamond certification scheme operates effectively for the benefit of all Liberians, including those communities involved in diamond mining.

The United Nations team in Liberia will provide its continued support to assist the country to fully meet its obligations under the Kimberley Process.
