UN expert on trafficking in persons to visit Liberia

GENEVA – UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons, especially women and children, Siobhán Mullally, will conduct an official visit to Liberia from 9 to 18 December 2024.

During the visit, the Special Rapporteur will examine all forms of trafficking in persons, including for purposes of forced labour in high-risk sectors, such as mining, agriculture and domestic work, and the gender dimension of trafficking for purposes of sexual exploitation, with particular attention to the rights of victims and survivors, and to the State’s obligations of prevention, protection and accountability. She will examine the risks of trafficking in the context of migration, and in the post-conflict, transitional justice and peace building contexts, and will consider efforts to address child trafficking for all forms of exploitation.

The expert will visit Monrovia, Bong County, Ganta in Nimba County, and Bo-Waterside in Grand Cape Mount County, where she will meet with national and local authorities, civil society organisations, survivors, development partners and other stakeholders.

The Special Rapporteur will hold a press conference to share her preliminary findings on Wednesday 18 December at 12:30 (local time) at One UN House in Monrovia. Access will be strictly limited to accredited journalists.

The expert will present her full report to the Human Rights Council in June 2025.
