Liberia: World Vision resumes food distribution in IDP camps

World Vision yesterday resumed food distributions to displaced people in Monrovia. The World Food Programme (WFP) supplied food is first being distributed to 31,478 people at Wilson Corner IDP camp.
World Vision used a new distribution system called Community Based Group Distribution instead of the tradition "Scooping" method. In the new system, food is provided to groups of family heads who then share the food equally among their families.

The displaced people are receiving monthly rations that contain 12.6kg cereals; 1.5kg pulses and 0.9kg of oil per person.

The beneficiaries at Wilson Corner Camp expressed satisfaction at the system of distribution.

"We are very happy with the distribution. This is the way it ought to be," said Sam Sewa, a family head in the camp.

It was a hectic day for WV staff because the new system was also new to many of them.

"Our staff did great because we were training as well as distributing food. I am glad that we had experienced seconded staff from Malawi, Sierra Leone and Zimbabwe," said Commodity Manager Elie Gasagara.

He said the community based group distribution system is accurate, fast and reduces loss.

World Vision is also expected to distribute WFP food to 77,000 people in Montserrado and Margibi counties.
