Seven years of civil strife in Liberia were brought to a close in 1996 when free and open presidential and legislative elections were held. The years of fighting coupled with the flight of most businesses disrupted formal economic activity and a still unsettled domestic security situation has brought the rebuilding of the social and economic structure of this war-torn country to a standstill. Since 1981, Christian Aid Ministries (CAM) has been operating health and social service programs around the world, providing an average of 15 million pounds of food, clothing, medicines, and seeds annually. In Liberia, CAM supports 75 health centers in 13 different counties, all of which are providing free medical services to the surrounding communities.

As part of Direct Relief's ongoing support to Liberia, this shipment included thousands of bottles of antibiotics donated by GlaxoSmithKline, and prenatal vitamins contributed by TEVA Pharmaceuticals USA.
