Rome, 13 August 2003 - A special flight dispatched by the Cooperazione Italiana landed in Monrovia yesterday with 200,000 euro's worth of emergency aid destined to meet the basic needs of the civil war-battered population, in particular its most vulnerable components: the elderly, women and children.
An overall 39 tonnes of goods included: 5 containers of water, each with a capacity of 7,500 litres, complete with distribution ramps, as well as 10 tents, 210 kitchen units, 3,000 blankets, a 70 kw generator, a water purifier, 80 plastic rolls, 12 tonnes of high-energy biscuits, 5 units for assistance in child delivery, burn treatment and general pathologies with a capacity for treating 50,000 people for a period of 3 months.
These emergency goods were received by the personnel of the World Food Program and the Italian non-governmental organisations AFMAL and Intersos and later brought to St. Joseph's Hospital, run by AFMAL, where they were put to immediate use.
This intervention by Italy is among the first to reach Monrovia.
