Rice production in 2024 forecast at above-average level
Harvesting of the 2024 paddy crop, virtually the only cereal grown in the country, concluded last December. The rainy season, which normally extends from May to October, had a good performance in the key producing counties of Lofa, Bong and Nimba. In these regions, seasonal rainfall amounts were near average, with a favourable impact on vegetation conditions and yields. By contrast, in most of the other counties, precipitation amounts were near to slightly below average and rains were erratically distributed. Prolonged dry spells, in particular early in the season, were followed by torrential rains in June and July, which triggered floods in parts of Montserrado, Bong and Grand Cape Mount counties.
The aggregate 2024 paddy production is forecast at about 325 000 tonnes, near the 2023 level and about 18 percent above the average of the previous five years, mainly reflecting the favourable weather conditions in key cropping areas.
