SITUATION UPDATE AND HUMANITARIAN NEEDS
• Hostilities in Lebanon have further escalated with intense airstrikes reported across multiple areas north and south of the Litani River including South, Nabatieh, Beirut, Bekaa, Baalbek-El Hermel, Mount Lebanon and the North. Ground clashes have also been reported in parts of southern Lebanon. Reportedly all villages South of the Litani River (all SLR) received evacuation orders to move north of the Litani river including Tyre city as well as the southern suburbs of Beirut affecting hundreds of thousands of people.
• The Lebanese Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has reported 72 deaths and over 437 injuries to date, with more than 7 children killed and over 38 injured.
• As of 5 March, an estimated 83,000 people (roughly 29,000 children) are displaced since the beginning of hostilities, according to the Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Unit, with larger scale displacements expected in the coming days.
• Lebanese authorities have opened a total of 399 shelters across the country, with the majority being public schools. 357 shelters reported as at full capacity.
• The Minister of Education & Higher Education (MEHE) announced the closure of all educational institutions across the country until further notice.
• MEHE has allocated around 900 public schools to serve as potential collective shelters, representing 73 per cent of all public schools. 325 schools are currently being used as collective shelters, representing 26 per cent of all public schools.
• Water infrastructure remains operational at this stage, with no additional damage reported to date. Water access continues to be maintained for the affected populations, and no new impacts have been recorded beyond the previously reported damaged water stations.
• The Lebanese DRM Unit reported urgent needs including water, mattresses, blankets, and diesel to operate generators in shelters due to insufficient solar power for critical energy needs.
