Background
Since Thursday 6 March, escalating hostilities in the Tartous, Lattakia, Homs, and Hama Governorates of Syria have reportedly resulted in the deaths of civilians, damage to property and infrastructure, as well as displacement in coastal areas1. The fighting has also resulted in Syrians fleeing across the border into Lebanon, with the majority arriving in the preceding days. According to local authorities and information so far available, 8,828 individuals (1,873 families, of which 63 are Lebanese families who were residing in Syria) have newly arrived in 17 locations across the Akkar Governorate in northern Lebanon, predominantly families. Massaaoudiye and Tall Bire have the highest concentrations of newcomers, with 2,331 and 1,557 new arrivals respectively. Other towns in North Governorate including Tripoli, Khoura and Zgharta have also had new arrivals although in lesser numbers of approximately 2,000 people (795 families) with exact arrival numbers still being gathered. Arrivals are continuing, and additional information from local authorities in areas beyond Akkar is being gathered, thus overall numbers are likely to rise
