Tragic death of Lebanese Red Cross emergency medical volunteers

Beirut, June 11th, 2007 - The Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement deplores the death of two Lebanese Red Cross emergency medical volunteers. The Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement stresses the importance of respecting the medical and relief teams working in the field in support of the victims of the current hostilities.

The tragic event took place near the Lebanese Red Cross (LRC) first aid post in Burj el-Arab close to Nahr el Bared Camp. Boulos Meemary (born in 1982, single), was head of the first aid centre at Halba. He had joined the LRC as a volunteer in 2000. Haitham Sleiman (born in 1981, single), worked at the Halba center. He joined the LRC as a volunteer in 2003.

The Red Cross/Red Crescent Movement emphasizes that medical personnel, vehicles and facilities should not be subjected to attack. Medical personnel and humanitarian workers must be allowed to carry out their tasks and must, especially, have unimpeded access to the wounded.
