BACKGROUND
Since early 2011, Lebanon has received the largest number of Syrian refugees after Turkey and has the world’s highest per capita concentration of refugees compared to its population. As of April 2015, over 1.1 million Syrians have registered with UNHCR.
WFP began its operations in Lebanon in June 2012 following an official request from the Government of Lebanon. In response to the increasing number of refugees, WFP expanded its operation more than 30 times. In March 2015, WFP delivered assistance to over 920,000 vulnerable Syrian refugees and Palestinian Refugees from Syria in Lebanon.
