Lebanon: Flash Update #35 - Escalation of hostilities in Lebanon, as of 14 October 2024

HIGHLIGHTS

• 2,309 people killed and 10,782 injured since 8 October (MoPH).
• 746,584 persons internally displaced since 8 October 2023, of which 52% female and 48% male (IOM).
• 188,146 people seeking refuge in 1,059 collective shelters, of which 876 have already reached capacity (DRM).

SITUATION OVERVIEW

Lebanon continues in the grip of a severe humanitarian crisis, with Israeli airstrikes intensifying and expanding into previously unaffected areas, impacting civilians and critical infrastructure. To date, Lebanon’s Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) has reported over 2,309 deaths and 10,782 injuries since 8 October 2023, for a total of 13,091 conflict-related casualties. At least 890 children have been injured and 127 children killed, according to UNICEF. More than 400,000 children in Lebanon have been displaced over the past three weeks, and UNICEF warns that the conflict is taking a heavy toll on the country's school system.

Continued military operations and forced displacement orders issued by the Israeli army trigger new waves of displacement, especially from southern Lebanon and the southern suburbs of Beirut. As of 14 October, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) recorded 746,584 internally displaced persons (IDPs) since 8 October 2023, of which 52% female and 48% male. Of these, 188,146 displaced people are accommodated in 1,059 collective shelters, of which 876 (83 per cent) have reached their maximum capacity. The highest percentage of IDPs in collective shelters are reported in Mount Lebanon Governorate and Beirut.

At least 326,763 people left Lebanon between 23 September and 7 October 2024, according to IOM, while UNHCR/SARC estimate that approximately 276,000 people (70 percent Syrians and 30 percent Lebanese) crossed to Syria between 23 September and 11 October. Additionally, over 11,000 Lebanese have arrived in Iraq, according to UNCHR Iraq.
