- Lebanon is experiencing a dramatic escalation in hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Casualties between 17 and 24 September amount to 5,505 wounded and 657 dead, with 72 more dead and 400 wounded on 25 September. The rapidly deteriorating situation is putting a major strain on the already overstretched health and shelter sectors notably.
- Continuing strikes have triggered significant new population displacements of more than 100,000 people over the last few days, bringing the total of internally displaced people (IDPs) since October 2023 to over 200,000. In addition, there are reports of Lebanese and Syrian civilians fleeing into Syria.
- Education centres across the country remain closed until the end of the week, with 347 public schools serving as collective shelters already hosting over 43,000 IDPs.
- DG ECHO and partners in the southern regions are closely monitoring the situation and needs of the population, assisting displaced people via the provision of non-food items, health and protection services, as well as emergency cash assistance.
- On 18 September, the authorities of Lebanon requested assistance through the Union Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM) in the form of essential medications and medical supplies to respond to the current needs of the Lebanese Health Sector.
