CONTEXT
During the second week of October, the situation in Lebanon intensified, with Israeli airstrikes continuing to target densely populated areas, particularly in central Beirut and its southern suburbs. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Public Health, 2,255 people have been killed and 10,524 injured. 187,900 individuals are seeking refuge in 1,032 collective shelters. Alarmingly, 863 of these shelters have reached maximum capacity, further exacerbating an already critical humanitarian situation.
On October 10, airstrikes on the Ras al-Nabaa and Basta neighborhoods resulted in more than 20 fatalities and over 100 injuries, marking the third assault on central Beirut during this conflict. Earlier, on October 9, a strike on Karak in the Zahle district killed at least 11 people, while Israeli troops targeted UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, injuring two peacekeepers. That same day, five civil defense workers were killed in an airstrike on a civil defense center in Derdghaya and a building sheltering displaced individuals in Wardaniyeh was struck, resulting in four deaths and ten injuries.
This escalation of violence has also severely impacted healthcare services, with 39 attacks reported on healthcare facilities, leading to the deaths of 94 healthcare workers on duty and the closure of 100 primary healthcare centers and dispensaries. As the situation deteriorates, the humanitarian crisis deepens, underscoring the urgent need for interventions and support.
Amidst this crisis, Amel remains committed to its humanitarian response, focusing on delivering basic assistance, primary health services, and protection support to those affected by the conflict, including internally displaced persons. In parallel, Amel emphasizes a coordinated and complementary response, collaborating with other partners through relevant government and United Nations-led structures.
