Kuwait to provide 1,000 houses for Syrian refugees in Lebanon - Al-Maatouq

BEIRUT, June 16 (KUNA) -- Chairman of Kuwait-based International Islamic Charity Organization (IICO) Dr. Abdullah Al-Maatouq said Monday Kuwait intended to provide 1,000 housing units to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon.

Al-Maatouq, also Amiri Diwan Advisor and Representative of the UN Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs, called on the Lebanese government to specify the place for the new housing units.

"This project will be implemented in a short period of time and will be integrated with its schools, health clinics, mosques and all necessary services," Al-Maatouq told KUNA.

He said the IICO would continue providing humanitarian assistance for the Syrian refugees who were living in very difficult conditions.

He underlined importance of the visit by Marzouq Al-Ghanim, Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker and Head of the Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union, to the Syrian refugees' camps in Lebanon.

Al-Maatouq said Kuwait's government and people were keen on helping the Syrian refugees in neighboring countries to alleviate their suffering.

The IICO had built 2,000 houses in the Zaatari camp in Jordan and 2,000 houses in a camp in Turkey. (end) mah.bs
