Indonesia reaffirms support to Lebanese and Palestinian people
"We remain consistent in supporting the struggle of the Palestinian people to realize a Palestinian State that is independent and sovereign," he said before the House of Representatives (DPR) Plenary session.
In his state of the nation address before the DPR plenary session, the president said Indonesia welcomes the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) Resolution No 1071 made on August 12 to cease hostilities and reactivate the peace process in the region.
"As a form of our commitment, we have stated our readiness to join the UN Peacekeeping Force to protect Palestinian and Lebanese people from the Israeli attack," he said.
He said Indonesia has played actively in seeking peace in the Middle East, mainly Lebanon and Palestine which had been attacked by Israeli military. More than 1,000 civilians were killed in Lebanon due to the Israeli attack.
Indonesia and Malaysia have proposed to hold an emergency summit of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) that produced a declaration urging the United Nations to end the conflict in Lebanon. The two countries have also prepared its forces to join the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (Unifil) .
The Indonesian Military has made 850 personnel ready to be deployed to Lebanon and Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said the number of the personnel might be increased to 1,000 people.
On situation in Iraq, President Yudhoyono said Indonesia supported the transitional process in the country to enable the people of Iraq to get their rights and sovereignty to rule and build their country.
