Improving informal settlement conditions in Lebanon

BEIRUT [ACTED News] – Over a million Syrians have fled the crisis in their home country and crossed the border into Lebanon. As this number continues to rise, finding suitable, affordable accommodation is becoming an increasing challenge for families. This has resulted in the substantial growth of informal settlements, usually consisting of tents and makeshift structures, which are now home to an estimated 100,000 refugees. These informal settlements are characterized by extremely poor living conditions, limited access to water and overcrowding, making them home to some of the most vulnerable families in Lebanon.

To improve the living conditions of these vulnerable families, ACTED teams are setting up essential sanitation facilities, including latrines and hand-washing stations in the settlements. Basic construction materials will also be provided to families to improve the quality of their shelters, ensuring they have adequate levels of privacy and protection.
