Since July, 204,500 people have been affected by floods, landslides and storms across Lao PDR.

Induced by tropical cyclone Yagi, heavy rains caused additional floods and landslides in September, impacting Lao PDR’s northern provinces of Luang Namtha, Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang and Bokeo. As a result, 40,000 people were impacted in two districts of Luang Namtha province.

Flooding downstream on the Mekong and its tributaries caused damage in widespread areas of the country. WFP supported the government in emergency distribution of rice for 14,240 severely affected people in Luang Namtha province.

WFP also participated in a joint needs assessments and is providing logistics support for government response plans. In addition, WFP is planning cash distributions for long-term recovery.
Situation highlights

Heavy rains in early September caused landslides, flooding and significant damage to property and community infrastructure in four northern provinces. Forty-eight villages in two districts of Luang Namtha province were most impacted, with 20 villages severely affected. More than 40,000 people are in need of assistance, including long-term recovery needs because of the destruction of agricultural production areas.

Floods also occurred in Phongsaly, Oudomxay, Luang Prabang, Bokeo, Houaphan, Xayaboury, Bolikhamxay, Khammouane, Savannakhet and Vientiane provinces, impacting communities, roads and infrastructure.

Rising levels in the Mekong river (up to 10 meters in the course of the monsoon season) caused floods downstream, with parts of Vientiane capital prefecture impacted.
