Operational Updates
- Over 500 village nutrition facilitators from 168 villages were trained on farmer nutrition school modules, covering topics such as the causes of malnutrition, the importance of a balanced diet, and home-based agriculture for nutrition, under the second phase of the Agriculture for Nutrition project. Refresher sessions were also held for 225 village nutrition facilitators from 75 villages across 15 districts in six southern provinces. The facilitators will share the knowledge gained with communities, particularly among pregnant and breastfeeding women, and caregivers of children under 2, in support of improved nutrition outcomes.
- The Embassy of the Russian Federation handed 149 mt of canned fish over to the Ministry of Education and Sports in Vientiane, to support the national school meals programme in northern Lao PDR.
- Construction of water systems and kitchens started in 74 schools in Attapeu, Sekong, and Salavan provinces to meet basic infrastructure needs. This activity is a key component of the Accelerating School Meals programme supported by the Government of Germany.
- WFP, in partnership with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, organized a workshop to review the cash assistance provided during the emergency response and recovery activities related to the 2024 Typhoon Yagi flooding in Luang Namtha province.
The workshop aimed to document key lessons, identify best practices, and provide recommendations for future interventions. - With support from the Government of France, WFP conducted a digital government review and ICT assessment mission in Sekong province, as part of the Shock-Responsive Social Protection pilot project. In collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare, the mission assessed the readiness of digital infrastructure and human resource capacities critical to expanding the Lao National Social Registry and Social Protection Management Information System. With technical support from WFP, the pilot project aims to improve shock-responsive social assistance coverage for food-insecure households in Sekong province, while supporting Lao PDR’s strategy to strengthen government-led social protection systems and enhance timely and effective responses to climate-related shocks.
