Situation Report – Flooding in Lao PDR

This report is produced by the Office of the UN Resident Coordinator, in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office of the Government of Lao PDR. It covers the period to August 23, 2013. Further reports will be issued as the situation requires.

I. Highlights/Key Priorities

• continuous heavy rainfall during June to August and the influences of the JEBI and Mongkhut typhoons that have recently blown to the north of Lao PDR have resulted in many provinces in the Northern and Central part of Laos being flooded

• An estimated 116,518 people have been affected by the flooding with over 20 people killed including 16 from flash floods on 20 August in Beng district of Oudumxay.

• Rice fields damaged: 6,224 hectares, gardens 1,610 hectares, upland rice 6,376 hectares

• Losses of livestock: 426 cows, 161 buffalos, 240 goats, 1,283 pigs, 35,942 poultries, 236 fish ponds

• Education impact: 13 schools damaged, teaching materials 1,163 books, black board 34, table and chair 338 sets, iron roofs 348 sheets.

• Water and Sanitation sector: 327 ground water pumps, 596 wells, natural water pipe 5 units, 1,107 latrines

• Infrastructure: 77 irrigation systems, 7 bridges, 769km of road, 22 areas, irrigation canal damaged 16,800 M, 12 schools, 64 wells, 5 ground water pump, 100 latrines, rice warehouse 1, permanent water reservoirs 36, water pipe 7 areas, electric pole damaged 27, natural water pipe 5 areas
