Lao Red Cross gives food supplies to Champassak flood victims

Lao Red Cross President Dr Snivourast Sramany and his colleagues recently took supplies to nine villages in Champassak province after they lost crops during tropical storms Haima and Nok-Ten last year.

The villages are located in Soukkhouma and Pathoumphone districts.

Thanks to the Singapore Red Cross, rice, food, salt and other essentials worth over 358 million kip were handed over, with representatives from the provincial Red Cross, district authorities and local communities in attendance.

The provisions will be distributed to 1.895 people from 299 families in Bounkeo, Huayhaeneua, Thasaeng and donghuaban villages in Soukouma district and 2.000 people from 328 families in Paktuan, Beuaydao, Khonnoy,Boungkham and Tomotha villages in Phathoumphone district.

Each person will be given 15 Kg of sticky rice and each family will receive 5Kg of salt. The Provincial authorities reported that 24 villages in Soukhouma district had sustained damage from flooding which had affected more than 1.000 hectares of rice, fishponds, irrigation system, wells and roads.

In Pathoumphone district, 32 villages suffered serve damage, losing 2.000 hectares of rice and two irrigation systems, and sustaining damage to state property.

The two districts have been working to repair damaged roads and irrigation systems.
