Strengthening National Capacity for Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness

• WFP took part in the Government-led conference “Global Mountain Dialogue for Sustainable Development: Towards the Bishkek+25 Summit” with participation from 50 countries and 25 international organizations. The conference discussed integrated approaches to reducing community vulnerability to climate risks and enhancing food security for at-risk populations. WFP supports the Government in strengthening shock-responsive social protection, disaster risk management, climate-resilient food systems, and the adaptive capacity of communities. Additional efforts focus on building human capital, promoting climate-smart agriculture, and integrating nutrition into social protection and school meals programmes.

• WFP, in collaboration with the UN Resident Coordinator’s Office and United Nations Development Programme, supported the Ministry of Emergency Situations in hosting an international conference on monitoring and forecasting climate-induced disasters. The event analysed critical gaps in the national forecasting system and highlighted opportunities to adopt innovative technologies such as remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and geographic information systems. The discussions focused on strengthening regional cooperation for transboundary hazard monitoring and adapting international best practices from Slovenia, China, Georgia, France, and Kazakhstan to enhance early warning systems. As a key outcome, the conference outlined next steps for developing a Unified National System for Monitoring and Forecasting, which is essential for improving disaster preparedness and enhancing national resilience and food security.
