World Refugee Day on 20 June – a day like any other?

Today, an estimated 43 million people are forcibly displaced around the world. And the number keeps growing. The Danish Refugee Council is one of the humanitarian organisations working in support of refugees, and has activities in more than 33 countries around the world.

Outside Dadaab in Kenya, where the world’s largest refugee camp is located, hundreds of people are waiting. They come from Somalia and have fled from war, insecurity, and on top a drought that has eradicated last hopes. Inside the camp 350,000 people are living a life far from any public notion and media attention. The newly arrived - families, individuals, children and elderly – wait outside the refugee camp to be registered before the gates will open to the bursting camp that by far has reached its limits. To them, this place represents their last chance for protection and help.

In Somalia, the 20 June will be a day like any other day. More refugees will cross the border to Kenya and show up outside Dadaab. On this day, the Danish Refugee Council along with other aid organisations will continue work in support of the people in desperate need knocking the doors of the world’s largest refugee camp.

Somalia is the country in the world generating the highest number of displaced and refugees. The Danish Refugee Council is working in Somalia and the region since 1998.

“The World Refugee Day is a reminder to us all that there is a growing need for ensuring emergency aid and for providing protection for the millions of people who are forcibly displaced because of armed conflicts and natural disasters,” says Andreas Kamm, the general secretary of the Danish Refugee Council.

The Danish Refugee Council is working in 33 countries providing emergency aid and support for more than one million people on three continents.
