Workshop in Kenya builds the knowledge base for effective engagement to Scale Up Nutrition

From 10th to 12th June 2015, the SUN Movement Secretariat partnered with UNICEF and the SUN Business Network for a three day workshop in Nairobi, Kenya, on Strengthening Effective Engagement to Scale Up Nutrition in Action. Participants came from the governments of SUN countries, Kenya, Zambia, Ethiopia, Uganda, Mozambique, Madagascar, Zimbabwe and Tanzania, in the East and Southern Africa Region with further representation from non-SUN countries Eritrea and Angola. Participants also included representatives from UN Agencies, the private sector and civil society.

In her opening, Florence Lasbennes, Chief of Staff of the SUN Movement Secretariat, recognized that whilst conflict of interest and mistrust remain an issue when engaging with the private sector, opportunities remain for learning between all stakeholders to ensure that the right nutrition outcomes are achieved.

Specific discussions held on the first day, led by the SUN Business Network, were focused on how the private sector can contribute to improving nutrition and the mechanisms through which governments can better engage private sector to support the achievement of government-lead nutrition goals.

The workshop explored the specific attitudes and behaviours which are needed to guide multi-stakeholder engagements. Countries noted the multifaceted nature of nutrition and cited the challenges in convening stakeholders from different sectors. The development of the national nutrition plan, identified as the common results framework, with clearly defined roles for each stakeholder, was seen as a tool which contributes to better co-ordination. Participants also agreed that sustaining progress in scaling up nutrition requires the following key elements:

  • Trust building
  • Leadership development
  • Support for transparency
  • Knowledge sharing

The workshop concluded with the recognition that, no one size fits all and that there can be improvements if stakeholders’ remain open and continue to learn from each other.
