Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • No significant rainfall was received during the month of March.

  • The 3-monthly Vegetation Condition index for the County was 24.68 indicating moderate drought with Pokot central (Sigor) being the most affected with a VCI of 20.01.

  • Over 50% of the surface water sources had dried up and congestion had been witnessed around strategic boreholes.

  • All the biophysical indicators were outside the expected normal range.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Three of the production indicators were outside the normal ranges. The access indicators were also fluctuating outside the normal ranges except the terms of trade.

  • Pasture and browse was depleted in Pokot central and North. However, there were pockets of the same in interior parts of Pokot west though dried up. The body condition of animals was poor except that of shoats in few sites where it was fair. The prices of livestock had decreased due to the deteriorating body condition.

  • MUAC as a utilization indicator fell outside the normal range with cases of malnutrition being on the rise.
