The county experienced sunny, hot and dry weather condition during the month, no rains received in the month under review which was was normal at this time.

The Current County Vegetation Index (VCI) for the month of January indicated severe Vegetation deficit band in all the county except tarbaj and Wajir east showing moderate vegetation deficit, with a vci score of 16.41 from previous month figure of 12.53, Wajir west and Wajir south livelihood zones indicating the most affected areas with scores of 10.67 and 13.77 respectively.

The current situation of Water declined as compared to similar times last year. Water trekking distance increased due to drying up water pans in all livelihood zones which made them to revert to boreholes.. The current sources of water include water pans and boreholes.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Livestock body condition for goat and camel shows good to fair across the livelihood zones with pastoral cattle in wajir south and pastoral all species especially sheep in Wajir west still showing fair to poor body condition. Current milk production declined in the month January and expected to continue till the long rains, the terms of trade decreased from 70.kg in December to 57kg for a sale of one medium size goat but still favourable. Deterioration of pasture and browse continued, in migration witnessed, No case of disruption of market reported, In Migration of livestock was reported in search of pasture and browse due to poor rainfall received. The percentage of under five children at risk of malnutrition was recorded 17.5 as from the previous month’s figure of 16.85 with no significant improvement.
