Highlights
- By 8 December 2023, a total 545,515 people had been displaced by El Nino-enhanced floods in Kenya, of which approximately 261,847 are children.
- UNICEF requires USD 19.3 million for El Nino flooding preparedness and response. USD 9.7 million is available, leaving a funding gap of USD 11.3 million (41%).
- Over USD 3.5 million has been utilized in ongoing procurement, prepositioning and distribution of critical UNICEF supplies to support WASH, Health, Nutrition, Child Protection, Education and Nutrition response, out of which USD 2.6 million worth of supplies (74%) have been received to support ongoing critical life-saving response.
- Up to 250,000 people affected by El Nino-enhanced floods, including up to 100,000 displaced and 150 people affected by Cholera outbreak in the flood-affected areas, of which 120,000 are children, have benefitted from Health and WASH response through distribution of UNICEF supplies and dissemination of life-saving messages.
- Up to 300 children separated from their families due to the floods have been reunited with their families to support their family-based care with UNICEF support.
- A total of 4,703 children under severe acute malnutrition (2,257 boys and 2,446 girls) in the most flood-affected counties of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Lamu and Tana River counties have been admitted for treatment, with a cure rate of 94.3%.
