The first camp in Dadaab was established in 1991. There are 4 camps in Dadaab: Hagadera,
Dagahaley, Ifo and Ifo.

Since December 2014, Somali refugees who decide to voluntarily return to their home country, receive UNHCR support in Kenya and Somalia.

A total of 4,949 non-Somalis refugees were relocated to Kakuma. The relocation is currently suspended due to the limited absorption capacity and services in Kalobeyei.

Voluntary Repatriation

During the reporting period, 832 refugees were supported to return to Somalia by flight (749 Kismayu, 83 Mogadishu).

As at 15th September, a total of 71,034 individuals from Dadaab had been assisted in the framework of voluntary return to Somalia since the launch of voluntary repatriation on 08 December 2014. 31,720 refugees have returned in 2017 alone. The cumulative total number of persons repatriated from Kenya to Somalia stands at 73,031. Currently there are 17,229 refugees (active in our database) willing to return to Somalia, with 11,358 being registered in 2017 alone. Registration is ongoing.

■ Due to suspension of road movements, and returns to Baidoa being put on hold until further notice, the Return Help Desks (RHD) continue to receive a reduced number of persons seeking return.

■ The monthly cross border coordination meeting was held in Dadaab on 6 th September and was attended by key stakeholders from Kenya and Somalia. The key issues deliberated on included, updates on latest political, security and humanitarian developments in Somalia with a particular emphasis on the humanitarian situation in Baidoa, cross border thematic group discussions, returnees protection monitoring, resumption of road convoys and facilitation of Go and See visits. It was noted that the Baidoa humanitarian situation had not improved significantly and therefore returns to this particular area would be put on hold until the situation improves. In regards to plans for resumption of road convoys, the Government of Kenya indicated that a survey to assess the road safety condition would be carried out in due course. In the meantime, returns by flight will be facilitated as usual.
