The first camp in Dadaab was established in 1991. There are 4 camps in Dadaab: Hagadera, Dagahaley, Ifo and Ifo 2.

Since December 2014, Somali refugees who decide to voluntarily return to their home country, receive UNHCR support in Kenya and Somalia.

A total of 4,949 non-Somalis refugees were relocated to Kakuma. The relocation is currently suspended due to the limited absorption capacity and services in Kalobeyei.

Voluntary Repatriation
- As at 15th November 2017, a total of 71,792 individuals from Dadaab had been assisted in the framework of voluntary return to Somalia since the launch of voluntary repatriation on 08 December 2014. The cumulative total number of persons repatriated from Kenya (Dadaab, Kakuma and Nairobi) to Somalia stands at 74,141. 32,478 returnees having been supported in 2017 alone.
- As at 15th November 2017, there were 18,140 refugees registered in our database willing to return to Somalia, with 12,874 being registered in 2017 alone.
- Resumption of voluntary return by road was cleared by the Government of Kenya, however due to heavy rains, roads are not passable on the Somalia side.
- Go and See Visit: Planning for the facilitation of third Go and See Visits from Dadaab camps to Somalia is underway. Refugee representatives will be selected to visit Baidoa and Mogadishu in the first week of December.
