Biophysical Indicators

• Select parts of the county experienced trace amounts of rainfall with a distribution in time of a day. Cumulative rainfall for the period (December 2021 to November 2022) accounted for only 30 percent of the rainfall normally recorded for that duration.

• Deterioration in the condition of vegetation was witnessed with the forage condition remaining considerably poor especially in Turkana North, Central and Loima sub counties.

• The body condition for all livestock species was poor and the milk production/consumption level was notably on a seasonal low. Increased cases of livestock mortalities attributed to starvation, dehydration and disease were reported while livestock migration was ongoing within and outside the county.

• The return distance to water source increased and thus remained considerably elongated with the cost of water also falling outside the normal range. Household purchasing power declined further due to the terms of trade deteriorating further.

• Proportion of households classified as having a poor FCS increased while majority of households were having a minimally adequate diet as evidenced by the high reduced coping strategy index and exhibited by the increased proportion of under-fives that were moderately’ malnourished.

• Consequently, the drought situation continued worsening during the period under review with the number of households in need of food assistance being 97,600 while those in need of livelihood support was 48,800.

• In addition, about 87,900 under-fives and 29,200 pregnant and lactating women were either severely or moderately malnourished and required urgent treatment.
