Biophysical Indicators

  • Dry weather conditions prevailed throughout the month with no rainfall being recorded across the entire County

  • As a result of continued dry spell, the Vegetation Cover Index (VCI) depicted significantly below average vegetation conditions at an index of 30 compared to 31 in the month of august.

  • The major source of water for livestock and domestic use in Tharaka were natural rivers, pipelines, boreholes and traditional river wells. Normally other sources of water would include springs, pans, boreholes and dams.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Migrations of livestock from Gabartula (Isiolo County) to Kathangachini (Tharaka Nithi County) were reported in the period under review.

  • Pasture and browse quality and quantity were fair to poor and have continued to diminish compared to the month of August.

  • Livestock body condition was fair to poor, which is normal at this time of the year.

  • Milk Production and consumption per livelihood zone declined from an average of 26 litres and 20 litres respectively in the month of august to an average production of 21 litres and an average consumption of 17 litres in the period under review.

  • Terms of Trade (ToT) ratio were at 94 in comparison to an average of 97 implying TOT was favourable to the livestock keepers.

  • Percentage of children at risk for malnourished whose MUAC was below 135 mm was 7.4 for the period under review which was slightly below the average of 8.2.
