Biophysical Indicators

  • A dry spell persisted in most parts of the County throughout the month of October, 2016.

  • The Vegetation Cover Index (VCI) depicted normal vegetation conditions at an index of 48 compared to 59 in the month of September.

  • The major sources of water were natural rivers, pipelines and boreholes. The state of water sources was inadequate owing to drying up of majority of surface water sources. With underground water sources yielding modest amounts of water.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

Production Indicators

  • Intra-migrations of livestock from Ntoroni, Kanjoro and Kathangachini locations (Tharaka North Sub County) to Meru National park were reported in the period under review.

  • Pasture and browse quality was fair to poor across all livelihood zones.

  • As a result of degradation of rangelands, the body conditions of livestock were worsening and currently in fair to poor state below normal range for the period.

Access Indicators

Milk production and consumption per household was 0.72 litres and 0.65 litres respectively compared to an average production of 1.5 litres and an average consumption of 1 litre.

Utilization Indicators

  • Percentage of children at risk of malnourishment whose MUAC was below 135mm was 8.4 for the period under review which was slightly below the long-term average of 8.7 percent.
