Drought Situation & EW Phase Classification

Biophysical Indicators

  • The onset of rains was in the third week of October with the date’s varying from 17th to 19th of October, 2015 which was timely. Temporal distribution was fair while spatial distribution was even for the month of November.

  • The Vegetation Cover Index (VCI) for September, October and November depicted moderate vegetation deficit conditions at an index of 24 compared to 23 in the month of October.

  • The major source of water for livestock and domestic use in Tharaka were natural rivers, pipelines, boreholes and traditional river wells which were normal.

Socio Economic Indicators (Impact Indicators)

  • Pasture and browse quality was fair attributed to favorable weather characterized by heavy rains and low temperatures.

  • Livestock body condition was fair to good, which was normal at this time of the year.

  • Milk Production and consumption per livelihood zone improved significantly to averages of 27 litres and 22 litres respectively in the period under review from averages production of 19 litres and an average consumption of 15 litres recorded in October.

  • Terms of Trade (ToT) ratio were at 111 in comparison to an average of 97 in the month of October implying ToT was favourable to the livestock keepers.

  • Percentage of children at risk for malnourished whose MUAC was below 135mm was 7.2 for the period under review which was below the average of 8.3.
