Sweden and UNHABITAT enter a USD 14,2 million agreement

In December 2011 the Swedish International Development Agency (Sida) decided to contribute SEK 100 million (USD 14,2 million) over four years 2012-2015 to UN-HABITAT. Sweden’s Ambassador to Kenya and Permanent Representative to UN-HABITAT, Ms. Ann Dismorr, and the Executive Director of UN-HABITAT, Dr. Joan Clos, signed the agreement on 18 January 2012. This marks Sweden’s renewed commitment to support sustainable and safe cities and improved living conditions, especially for the poor, in urban areas.

Under this agreement Sweden will support the implementation of UN-HABITAT’s medium term strategic plan 2012-2015 focusing on:

  1. promotion of participatory planning, management and governance,
  2. promotion of pro-poor land and housing and
  3. excellence in management.

Poverty alleviation, gender, democracy human rights and partnerships will be key cross-cutting issues. Equitable and inclusive urban legislation will be included as well as evaluations of activities funded under the agreement.

UN-HABITAT is undergoing major organisational change. Sweden welcomes the intentions of the change process, especially the strong commitments towards delivering of results, transparency and accountability.
