UNDP and UN/DHA are assisting Kenya in
coping with the effects of two years of poor rains which has brought severe
drought to large parts of Kenya, particularly the country's eastern and
Valley areas where approximately 1.4 million people live. A $249,000 project supported by the two organizations will
strengthen government capacity to coordinate aid and emergency activities, and will improve transportation for relief
operations. The assistance will also support NGOs involved in food and cash for work programmes, which are aimed at
enhancing nutrition and income-earning opportunities for affected groups.
